Article: A Healthy Weight Loss Diet

Many of us try to lose weight to improve our appearance, however we are also doing our health a big favour. Being overweight significantly increases our risk of developing many serious problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, certain cancers, back pain and problems with weight bearing joints.

We will help you to understand how to lose weight sensibly. Every diet has at least some good points and there are diets that have many good points. Unfortunately, in order to work quickly, there are diets with some serious drawbacks.

  • Intelligent Nutrition
We will teach you about a sensible way of eating that will not only help you lose weight; it will do your body and your health good too.

One of our goals at Intelligent Nutrition is to help you understand why. This is because the more reasons you have in your mind for doing something, the more likely you are to make better choices more frequently. It’s all about knowing what food does in the body, how the body processes it and how that affects our metabolism.

  • Sensible weight loss
Sensible weight loss is about knowing how much weight we can lose each per week without it affecting our metabolism long-term and without losing muscle mass or other non-fat tissue such as bone mineral. Unfortunately, these are the types of problems encountered with the ‘quick result’ commercially available type of weight loss diets. When people seek rapid results there is usually a long-term cost to their health.

Sensible weight loss is about finding a way of eating that is enjoyable, easy and without the depravation that comes with most diets. This way, a new healthy approach to eating can become a way of life.

Most diets have to stop sometime because they are so restrictive. They are not a ‘normal’ way to live long-term. When someone eventually reverts to their old habits, they should not be surprised that the weight piles on, often more quickly than before, because their metabolism has been slowed down by their dieting. We will help you to understand how to avoid this scenario.

We will show you how you can eat fewer calories without really noticing, without feeling the gnawing hunger and mood swings that accompany some diets.

  • When is a calorie not a calorie?
We will tell you why the human body treats one calorie of fat one way and one calorie of carbohydrate another, and why one calorie of protein is treated differently again.

Knowing this will enable you to plan your meals in such a way that you can eat fewer calories without being aware of it.

  • Fats: the good, the bad… and the downright ugly
We will help you to understand that there are different types of fat. Cutting out all dietary fats really won’t do your health any favours at all. It will only contribute to the epidemic of essential fat deficiency we see in our society today.

We will help you to recognise which are the good (essential) fats, which are the bad (undesirable) fats when you are trying to lose weight and which are the ugly fats that really shouldn’t be eaten at all.

  • Not all carbohydrates are equal
We will show you that there are also different types of carbohydrate foods. Some of these will help you to lose weight, but others will contribute to weight gain.

  • Smart exercise
At Intelligent Nutrition we will also help you to see how different types of exercise are vital to the success of any good weight loss programme. You will begin to realise why the time of day you take your exercise is important because of the effect it has on stimulating your metabolism.

In addition, you will also understand why resistance exercise to build muscle is so important for long-term weight loss, again because of its effect on our metabolism.

  • Metabolism
When we speak about metabolism in the context of weight loss we are usually talking about metabolic rate. This the rate at which our body burns the calories we eat. Someone with a higher metabolic rate will have more energy, be warmer and leaner than someone with a slower metabolic rate.

We will tell you about the different ways you can stimulate your body’s metabolism through diet and exercise. We will also help you to find out whether your body’s metabolic regulator, your thyroid gland, is up to the job.

  • Micronutrients
Micronutrients are the vitamins, minerals and essential fats. They are termed ‘essential’ when we cannot manufacture them, when we have to have them in our diet. One job that they do is to help the many different enzymes that convert carbohydrates into energy, or fat into energy.

These enzymes often need specific vitamins and minerals nearby in order to work. If we are not getting enough of even a single vitamin or mineral in our diet, needed by these enzymes, they will not be able to work to full capacity and our metabolism will be impaired. This means that we will not burn calories as fast as we could.

At Intelligent Nutrition we will help you identify whether your metabolism is being impaired by micronutrient deficiency and what to do about it.
